For those of us who were lucky enough to participate in this year’s Ladies Classic at the Falcon Lake Golf Course on June 2, 2018, we were not disappointed. Sure it was rainy and cold but the warmth we experienced coming together for a great cause couldn’t dampen our spirits. This year our group decided to raise funds for the Manitoba Cancer Care Foundation in honour of our own Falcon Ladies League member Jackie McIvor presently battling Colon Cancer.
The tournament was set for 18 holes but we all agreed in the pouring rain to shorten up the game to 9 holes and start the auction & dinner earlier. While the rain did stop and managed to hold off for most of the afternoon, the Falcon Lake Golf Course was kind enough to give all of the participants a free pass for 18 holes at a later date in order to compensate for the bad weather. Thank you for your generosity!
With the new Falcon Golf Course clubhouse still under construction we decided to host the banquet a few blocks away in the curling club. Several members made the atmosphere extra special by volunteering their time to beautifully decorate the hall. The tables were adorned with lovely planter centrepieces and little spruce trees for everyone.
While there were fantastic hole prizes for the winning participants, the silent auction items were amazing. A stand-up paddle board, a fly & fish trip for two, a custom painted mini fridge honoring Jackie McIvor, were only a few of the many terrific items that the participants were able to bid on substantially increasing our total donation to Cancer Care Manitoba.
The highlight of the event had to be when Jackie McIvor bravely addressed the participants with an emotional speech regarding her personal experience with colon cancer.
Jackie emphasized how important early detection is. She explained, like most who are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, that she had no symptoms or family history of the disease therefore had no reason to believe that she was at risk. Unfortunately by the time she did discover her condition it had already progressed to cancer. She expressed regret in not taking a simple screening test earlier in her life that might have shown a pre-cancerous condition easily treated with a colonoscopy. She urged all of us, if we haven’t done so already to not hesitate to take that simple home screening test.
So don’t just sit there. Get checked!
After a lot of hard work and perseverance, the members of the Falcon Ladies League are proud to report that our little group has raised $18,440.00 for Colon Cancer Research. Jackie’s team alone brought in the largest total of cash donation of $7,800.00 through the Manitoba Cancer Foundation website. Go Jackie Go! But our quest is not over. We hope to make it $20,000.00. You can still donate by clicking here on our event website at the Manitoba Cancer Care Foundation. Help us make it a reality!
Our hearts are with you and your family on your journey to wellness Jackie. See you on the course beautiful lady!
